I used to hate drawing hair. I hated drawing hair because I sucked at drawing hair. So I started treating hair like ribbons that sprouted out of the top of a person’s head and fell down around them. Then I would go back in and add contour lines, basically to hide the fact that I didn’t know what I was doing. It made for a cool graphic effect but it certainly didn’t look natural.

Over the years I’ve grown more confident drawing hair and I think it shows. This page is a fairly good example of the various ways I treat hair now. The graphic technique for the brunette, a more natural style for the blond, and matte black for dark hair.

Made with: Prismacolor pencils, Pentel 101 Brush Pen, Faber-Castel Pens, Prismacolor and various markers, on Catchet  paper.
